Responsible Enterprise E-Recycling: Staying Secure When Going Green

Companies are searching for new and better ways to become more sustainable. As talent and clients alike are looking to partner with environmentally conscious enterprises, finding the right responsible enterprise e-recycling solution is rising on the list of strategic initiatives. For those companies, the first step towards a greener culture starts in their data centers. More than 40 million tons of e-waste is generated annually across the globe. By reducing this waste, companies reduce carbon emissions, become more efficient in the data center, meet EPA standards and laws, and grow their corporate social responsibility presence. Unfortunately, many companies don’t have a defined enterprise e-recycling or IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) program. Going Green with an Enterprise E-Recycling Program Your hardware might be gathering dust in your data center, but that doesn’t [...]

Data Destruction vs Data Erasure: To Shred or Not to Shred

Security doesn’t end when your hardware does. As you prepare to decommission equipment, you need to plan for your data security. Do you destroy the latent data or erase it? You must continue security best practices beyond the lifecycle use of your physical equipment. And the most critical part of that is deciding what to do with your hard drives and storage devices before final decommissioning. The question being: to shred or not to shred? What Are Your Restrictions? If your company is under compliance requirements to destroy all your hard drives, then, at this point, your answer is pretty straightforward. Erasure is out of the question, so punching or shredding become the only options for you to remain within compliance. However, if destruction-only compliance is not a factor—and you [...]

Secure E-Waste Export and Recycling Act (SEERA): An Overview

What is the Secure E-Waste Export and Recycling Act (SEERA)? A bill under consideration in the U.S. House of Representatives called the Secure E-Waste Export and Recycling Act (SEERA) would require all e-waste recycling to be performed domestically and prevent the export of e-waste overseas, which could lead to counterfeit goods reentering the military and civilian electronics in the country, according to the bill’s sponsors. SEERA, introduced by Rep. Gene Green (D-TX) and Rep. Paul Cook (R-CA), seeks to stop the flow of electronic waste to China and other countries known for producing counterfeit electronic parts using the recycled material. Risks of Exporting E-Waste E-waste dumping drives the counterfeit electronics components industry, says Kristal Snider, co-founder of Electronic Resellers Association International. It “kills small businesses, threatens national security and funds criminal [...]

Spring Clean Your IT Infrastructure

It’s spring time. You’re enjoying the change of seasons as everything around you comes to life. This might inspire you to set some new goals, tidy up your workspace, or try some new ideas. When it comes to spring cleaning, you’re inclined to look on the surface, but overlook the place that needs the most attention: your office and the old IT equipment you’ve accumulated over the years. Now is the perfect time to spring clean your IT infrastructure by evaluating what's in your data center and dusting off unused equipment that might still hold value. Keeping unused equipment locked away doesn’t help you recover value. You should not take up valuable storage space to house IT equipment for the single purpose of protecting the data it stores. Unless disks [...]

With the levels of complexity for IT out there consistently growing and developing, methods of keeping up have to evolve as well. The options to stay on pace typically include software updates, firmware updates, hardware additions, and so many other advances.
