Error Code:

Module License Power On Failed.

Explanation:

This error is a licensing issue and was discovered by VMware customers and partners who had downloaded the ESX 3.5 Update2 and ESXi 3.5 Update2. The issue arises when ESX350-200806201-UG is applied to a system. When error is engaged, the Virtual Machine fails to power on or VMotion successfully. The following message is displayed in the vmware.log for the Virtual Machine:

This product is expired. Be sure that your host machine’s date and time are set correctly. There is a more recent version available at the VMware web site.

Module License Power on failed.

Cause:

The problem is caused by a build timeout that was mistakenly left enabled for the release build.

FixIT:

In August of 2008, product and web teams pulled the ESX 3.5 Update2 and ESXi 3.5 Update2 bits from the download pages so customers could no longer download the affected build. Updated builds and patches for impacted customers have been developed by VMware engineering teams. If your backup was restored, then it may have been longer than 60 days since the host was originally installed or perhaps the backup was performed prior to a license key being applied. Only appropriate license keys should resolve this issue.

Note:

Do not install ESX 3.5 Update2 or ESXi 3.5 Update2 if it has been downloaded from VMware’s website or elsewhere prior to August 12, 2008. VMware does not recommend changing the ESX host time as an alternative fix. Changing the time on an ESX host can result in several very serious side effects that could affect production environments. All Virtual Machines synced with ESX host and server time sensitive applications, including mail servers, database servers, and domain administrative systems, etc., would be damaged.
