If there is an error code you can’t fix, let us assist you in our monthly FixIT column. This month, we’re focusing on the v3700 v2 Direct Attach Compatibility Issue with IBM Power7 running AIX.

This issue occurs when the end user would like to directly attach 8Gb Fiber Channel FC 5735 on Power7 machine to 16Gb internal Fiber Channel adapters on v3700 v2 controller. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to direct attach to the controller as-is.

The Problem with the Configuration?

The 8Gb Fiber Channel card FC 5735 does not support direct attach whatsoever, even though it seems that, logically, it should work.

So, How Do You Fix this v3700 v2 Direct Attach Compatibility Issue with IBM Power7 Running AIX?

In order to get a direct attach to work in this scenario, you need to install a 16Gb capable FC EN0A Fiber Channel Adapter in the Power7 machine. Additionally, AIX must be upgraded to (at least) Version 7.1.  This will provide a 16Gb direct attach from the v3700 v2 to the FC EN0A Fiber Channel Adapter. Otherwise, you should utilize a SAN switch which will enable auto negotiation within the switch.
