Power over Ethernet (PoE) enables LAN switching infrastructure devices to provide voltage over copper Ethernet cables to a powered device. This technology was originally developed to support IP telephony products and has since been deployed in a new generation of products such as wireless access points, video cameras, point-of-sale devices, security access control (card scanners), building automation and industrial automation controllers.

Cisco offers a comprehensive range of 802.3af-based Power over Ethernet support across its Catalyst Intelligent Switches with both 10/100/1000 and 10/100 PoE LAN connections, including a 96-port 10/100 PoE module for the industry leading Catalyst 6500. Cisco’s 802.3af compliant PoE products are backwards compatible with Cisco’s existing PoE devices, such as IP Telephones and Wireless access points and offer Intelligent Power Management capabilities for more efficient management and prioritization of power delivery.
